Slave and Servant Plot

The Shorters provided a walled plot for slaves and servants to be buried. It is located directly in front of the entrance to the cemetery. It is the only marked and walled slave plot in this part of the country.

The slaves and servants graves would have been marked with wooden crosses or wooden posts with names carved or painted on them. Over time the markers deteriorated and the names are now lost.

The last Shorter family member buried in the cemetery is Governor Shorter’s daughter, Mary “Mollie” Jane Shorter Willingham, who died in 1922. However, it is thought that servants of the Shorter family were buried in the Slave-Servant Plot or after the plot was full around the perimeter of that plot for years after that.
